Garbage & Recycling

Garbage and reycling collection is provided by Johnson County Refuse and is picked up every Friday. All recyle and garbage containers should be placed curbside on Fridays by 7 a.m.

Garbage that cannot be recycled must be placed in garbage bags or cans with a $1.25 yellow garbage sticker attached. Any bag or container over 20 gallons requires two (2) stickers.

Garbage stickers are available for purchase at City Offices, Dewey's Jack & Jill, and Kum & Go. Year-round garbage stickers may be purchased directly from Johnson County Refuse at 877-423-9877.

Recycling Guidelines

Curbside recycling is mandatory in the City of West Branch. A monthly fee of $4.75 is included in your monthly water and sewer bill (whether or not you recycle). Each residence is provided with free red and green recycling bins. Bins are available at the City Office.

Red bins are for plastics, metal, glass, and cardboard.
Plastics Recycle emblems #1-7. Containers must be washed clean.
Metal Tin and aluminum cans. Must be washed clean & labels removed.
Glass Clear, brown, blue & green. Must be washed clean.
Cardboard Corrugated or chip board. Must be flattened and no larger than 2'x2' pieces.
Green bins are for paper.
Paper Newspaper, magazines, phonebooks, etc.

The following items are not recyclable:

  • Styrofoam
  • Plastic bags
  • Broken glass
  • Window or mirror glass
  • Cardboard not broken down
  • Tissue paper & paper plates
